Process
The food extrusion process involves several stages: preparation, mixing, extrusion, cutting, and drying. The exact procedure will depend on the product being produced, but in general, it follows these steps:
Preparation: The raw materials are prepared by cleaning, grinding, and mixing as necessary. For example, in the production of breakfast cereals, the grains are usually ground and combined with other ingredients like sugar, salt, and flavorings.
Mixing: The raw materials are combined in a batch mixer to create a uniform blend.
Extrusion: The mixed materials are fed into an extruder, which uses a screw to force the material through a die. The die is the shape the product will take when extruded. The high pressure and temperature inside the extruder cook the product as it passes through.
Cutting: As the product emerges from the die, it is cut into the desired length by a cutter.
Drying: The product is then dried to remove any remaining moisture and create a stable, shelf-stable product.
