A single screw extruder is a bioreactor that converts a variety of food ingredients such as corn, starch, wheat, rice, and soy into products such as snacks, pet food, and pasta.
A single screw extruder consists of a precision screw that rotates inside a smooth bore or grooved barrel (tube). The mechanical energy required for rotation is provided by a reduction gear and a variable speed motor.

The barrel is usually heated by an electric heating tape wrapped around the barrel. Inside the barrel is a vertical feed hopper with a volumetric screw feeder (with a variable speed drive to control the flow of material) that controls the amount of material entering the extruder. The outlet end of the barrel is equipped with some kind of flow restriction (breaker plate) and a suitably shaped die hole through which the extruded product is discharged to the atmosphere.
