How Does a Food Extruder Work?
The working principle of a food extruder is based on the extrusion process, which involves mixing, heating, and shaping raw materials. Here's a step-by-step explanation:
1. Feeding
Raw materials (e.g., grains, starches, proteins, or other ingredients) are fed into the extruder through a hopper. Ingredients are often pre-mixed with water, oils, or seasonings.
2. Mixing and Conveying
Inside the extruder barrel, a rotating screw (or screws, in twin-screw models) conveys the raw materials forward. The screw also mixes the ingredients, ensuring uniform distribution.
3. Heating and Pressurizing
As the material moves through the barrel, it is subjected to high pressure and temperature. This process gelatinizes starches, denatures proteins, and activates binding agents, creating a homogenous mixture.
4. Shaping
The mixture is forced through a die at the end of the extruder. The die determines the shape and size of the final product, whether it's a puffed snack, cereal loop, or pet food kibble.
5. Cutting
As the product exits the die, it is cut into the desired length by rotating blades. The cutting speed can be adjusted to achieve different product sizes.
6. Cooling and Drying
